They trick us into thinking we're going to change his heart because of that, but they decide it's not too late for him, which was a cool fakeout, and hey, they were right. At first it was kinda boring just discussing the website, but then it slowly develops into him very plainly trying to take advantage of the Phantom Thieves because he thinks they owe him. A lot of people seem to dislike this guy, but I thought his story was really something. The rank 9 scene of his son accepting the truth about his father without hesitation was honestly inspiring, and of the scenes of characters that work out that Ren is a Phantom Thief, his was one of the better ones. Besides that, him dealing with his Yakuza past and protecting his adopted son (weird, I'm sensing a theme) was a nice story to follow. He forces you to retrain your brain from just being nice and supportive to people he wants you to set him straight, not yes-and him. I just love that on one of his interactions, calling him pathetic is the one that offers the highest amount of bond points. It really lifts up Sojiro's character in a way that wouldn't have been the same without it I legitimately ended up looking at him in a totally new way after the fact, which I don't think any of the teammate confidants were able to pull off, at least not as hard. In fact, it makes for a better Futaba story than Futaba's actual confidant. Most of these are based on how their story made me feel, and the narrative of helping Sojiro keep his adopted daughter by his side is so great.
